Botanically known as Kerria lacca
It is used largely for its red - orange dye that is present inside the insect’s body. The colour is in a resin-like form that the insect secretes. Much like the American cochineal, colonies of lac insect are cultivates on various trees.
Part of Plant Used
The colourant, lac dye, is found in the body of the insect and in the eggs.
Habitat
It is found across various trees in India, Indochina and South of China. They attach themselves to smaller and more tender branches and shoots. In India, the most common host plants are the species that retain their leaves during the hot season like dhak (Butea monosperma) or Ber, a jujube, and kusum. Other than that, they can also be found on species of acacias and figs.
Dyeing Methods
The lac extract is soaked in cold water overnight to be used for dyeing. It gives out crimson to reds and deep purple shades. It also has high light and wash fastness on silks and wool. 5% extract can be used to dye deep shades of reds and pinks.
* Also can be used as Soap Making Colorant and Candle Making Colorant.
