Botanically known as Tagetes erecta
This species of flowering plant is native to Mexico but is now found in multiple parts of the world. It consists of yellow flowers with slight red highlights. The plant reaches to a height between 20 and 90cm and is widely used for medicinal, ceremonial and decorative purposes.
Part of Plant Used
The dye consists of dried and grounded flower heads/flower petals of the plant. It can be used fresh as well as in the dry powdered form.
Habitat
Native to Mexico and America, it is now grown in various parts of the world. It is found in the wild in the Mexican region.
Dyeing with Marigold
It gives beautiful vibrant yellow, greenish-yellow and orange colour shades with 50% dried marigold to WOF. It is used as a very good source of yellow with good to moderate wash fastness. It gives better wash fastness on mordanting with alum or iron.
