Natural Indigo Powder

Botanically known as Indigofera tinctoria

Natural indigo powder is an extract prepared from Indigofera tinctoria. It is an annual to perennial herb or subshrub up to 2m in height. One of the most important sources of blue colour, indigo has been the most successful dye plant ever known.

Leaves and stems are cut together in the process of indigo extraction.

Habitat

Indigofera tinctoria possibly originated from India. Its range has extended by frequent cultivation. It occurs wild or naturalised in the most countries of Africa, in Asia from Arabia to southeast Asia and in Australia.

Dyeing with Indigo

Indigo Vat processes vary from region to region. Countless shades of blues have emerged from the indigo vats of the world’s dyers with high resistance to light and wash fastness. Natural indigo was regarded as the colour of kings and king of colour.
